Parenting in the Digital Age

As students in the growing world of technology, we must become digital citizens. Here are some resources to assist us as we partner in developing digital citizens.

Technology use among children and adolescents continues to increase. Consider the number of devices that children now have access to. With access to the Internet, these devices allow children to connect to others in ways we never could have imagined.

With the proliferation of devices comes concerns regarding cyberbullying, screentime, digital citizenship, media literacy, and exposure to inappropriate content. For parents, keeping up it all can be a daunting challenge.

The resources below provide answers to some of these questions:

  • What can parents do to help kids use these devices responsibly?

  • When online, how can parents make sure their children are safe?

  • What can parents do prevent the sharing of personally identifiable information?

  • How can I teach my children to build a positive digital footprint?

common sense

Common Sense is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology. We empower parents, teachers, and policymakers by providing unbiased information, trusted advice, and innovative tools to help them harness the power of media and technology as a positive force in all kids' lives.

Media and technology are at the very center of all our lives today -- especially our children's. Kids today spend over 50 hours every week with screens. The media content they consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century. But parents, teachers, and policymakers struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing digital world in which our children live and learn.  Now more than ever, they need a trusted guide to help them navigate a world where change is the only constant.

Most, if not all, of our students are consumers of content on YouTube. Do a quick survey of your students and you're likely to discover that not only do they consume content on YouTube, they are creating content and publishing to YouTube. Now more than ever, it's important to teach our students about the standards of conduct expected from the YouTube community, as well as the implications (positive or negative) on their future for what they choose to upload to YouTube. Google also has an excellent YouTube and Digital Citizenship curriculum, available in more than five different languages, designed for students ages 13-17. Lessons in this curriculum include:
  • YouTube’s policies
  • How to report content on YouTube
  • How to protect privacy online
  • How to be responsible YouTube community members
  • How to be responsible digital citizens
